Executive Director

The Executive Director manages the human and financial resources of the DC Youth Orchestra Program and ensures that the DCYOP fulfills its mission and achieves its goals for excellence in music education, financial stability, community engagement, and the enrichment of young lives through music.




Reporting to the Board of Directors, the Executive Director is responsible and accountable for all aspects of the organization's management, including strategic planning, fund raising, marketing, public relations, promotion, production, operations, budgeting and financial management, communications, advocacy, and community partnerships. S/he oversees the development and implementation of artistic and educational policies that promote instrumental music education of the highest quality.




The Executive Director is the organization's chief fundraiser. S/he provides guidance and support to the fund-raising efforts of the Board. S/he establishes and maintains productive relationships with individuals, foundations, corporate sponsors, and government funders.




The Executive Director provides impetus to the work of the Board. S/he helps identify and recruit board members to ensure continuity of leadership for the organization. S/he provides staff support to the Board and its committees, and ensures that the Board has the information it needs for decision making. S/he ensures effective communication among the organizations internal and external stakeholders and constituencies, including Board, staff, faculty, parents, students, alumni, donors, government officials, and community representatives.




The Executive Director recruits, hires, motivates, supervises, evaluates, and provides leadership to a strong professional staff. S/he develops and maintains an environment that nurtures the talents of the young musicians who participate in the Program, and allows DCYOP conductors, coaches, and faculty to do their best work.




The Executive Director is the chief spokesperson for DCYOP and the visible representative of the organization throughout the community. S/he ensures strong and effective relationships with the DC Board of Education and DC Government. S/he actively seeks out opportunities to raise the profile and visibility of the DC Youth Orchestra Program throughout the National Capital Region.
