GENERAL PURPOSE: Under general direction of the Senior Graphic Designer or Creative Services Manager, creates, designs, develops, produces and delivers a variety of less complex and more routine visual communication, graphic design, internet-based communication, and print production materials to communicate the Agency?s mission, vision, projects and services to the public through brochures, flyers, posters, maps, ads, exhibit displays, newsletters, banners, signs, reports, and promotional pieces; assists with the coordination of contracts, projects that are outsourced, and pro curement functions; and works collaboratively with a team to produce materials; with direction and feedback, takes materials from concept to completion, including project coordination, scope and schedule definition, conceptualization and design, production, bids and contracts, and other associated administrative functions.
PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: The following duties ARE NOT intended to serve as a comprehensive list of all duties performed by all employees in this classification, only a representative summary of the primary duties and responsibilities. Incumbent(s) may not be required to perform all duties listed and may be required to perform additional, position-specific duties.
1. With participation of or general direction by Senior Graphic Designer or Creative Services Manager, meets with clients to discuss project purpose, format, scope of work, schedule, budget review process and distribution; writes scope of work or request for proposal; writes printing or fabrication specifications; solicits vendors, evaluates bids and assists making in the awards to bidders; sends estimates and obtains account codes from financial/ budget analyst, obtains project approval from management; prepares purchase order (PO) requisitions, invoices, and blanket PO?s/contracts with vendors for regularly used services; participates in meetings with vendor/contractor about the schedule, specifications, and shipping/delivery; conducts press checks; and tracks work order requests and coordinates projects from concept through design and delivery. 2. With oversight from Senior Graphic Designer or Creative Services Manager, conceptualizes and designs solutions to communicate and convey appropriate messages/information to the public through print, digital, or web media; defines the look of campaign, brochure or publication; works with writers and clients to establish content; selects/creates images and illustrations; selects format; prepares layouts; submits drafts for review; and creates digital artwork files suitable for printing or fabrication. 3. Under general supervision, schedules and meets with vendors; prepares files for offset printing or other production processes; sizes and color-corrects images; makes final edits; works directly with vendors to submit artwork; answers production-related questions and approve press proofs; occasionally attends press checks to monitor quality; prepares files for internal printing; plots/prints out, trim and delivers finished products; and prepares files for online display in coordination with web team to determine size and resolution. 4. Under general supervision, receives site locations plans and sign messages schedules; creates artwork and facility-specific documents including sign layouts, sign codes and quantities using Sound Transit?s approved graphic style; prepares digital artwork files for fabrication; and prints, trims and delivers temporary signage, banners and boards. 5. Under general supervision, designs a range of maps from simple, stylized maps to detailed geographical information system (GIS)-based, facility-specific maps; and uses mapping/GIS data and mapping software to create technical and display style maps. 6. Assists team with photo shoots, either internal or by hired photographers; reviews and selects best photos; color-corrects, crops and formats images for high-resolution and low-resolution purposes; creates composite images using advanced Photoshop software techniques; and creates promotional, technical and educational style illustrations. 7. Provides support to Creative Services Manager and Senior Graphic Designers as directed; serves as staff on agency committees; attends and participates in professional group meetings; maintains awareness of new trends and developments in the fields related to area of assignment including Macintosh computer platform and graphic design-related software; incorporates new developments as appropriate; ensures processes, policies and practices are interpreted and applied consistently and effectively; ensures accountability and compliance with all current and applicable state and federal laws, Agency policies and procedures, rules and regulations.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Education and Experience: Bachelors Degree in communications, graphic design, media productions, or closely related field and two years of experience in graphic design that includes development and production of graphic materials for visual, web-based and print communications; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Required Licenses or Certifications: Possession of valid Washington State Driver?s License.
Required Knowledge of: ??Operations, services, and activities of a graphic design production program and associated equipment. ??Graphic design principles including layout, typography, photography/illustration, color usage, information hierarchy, mapping, trends. ??Printing and print production practices, procedures, and processes; techniques, paper specifications, Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) printing requirements, and mailing requirements. ??Standard graphic industry software and online work order systems. ??Methods and techniques used in the development of graphic presentations, drawing, and photo editing. ??Vendor negotiation and bidding practices. ??Basic project management techniques. ??Modern office procedures, methods, and equipment including computers and computer applications such as word processing, spreadsheets, and statistical databases.
Required Skill in: ??Applying advanced principles and practices of graphic design techniques. ??Developing visual media including brochures, flyers, posters, maps, ads, exhibit displays, newsletters, banners, signs, reports, and promotional pieces. ??Working with consultants, contractors, and outside vendors in the development of various graphic materials. ??Advanced photography and photo manipulation. ??Familiarity with animation and internet/web graphics. ??Applying project management techniques and principles and managing projects.
Physical Demands / Work Environment: ??Work is performed in a standard office environment. ??Subject to standing, walking, bending, reaching, stooping, and lifting of objects up to 25 pounds; may occasionally be exposed to dangerous machinery, extreme weather conditions, physical harm, or extreme noise when working in the field.
