The Systems Engineer will help lead the effort to build out our platform. Typical projects include working with architects to design and provision hardware and software configurations for high capacity data storage systems, multi-tier web applications. Systems Engineers are heavily involved in developing the tools and processes that monitor and maintain our systems.
Responsibilities of the Systems Engineer:
As part of a cross-functional team, you’ll be commissioned with designing, implementing and maintaining the systems platforms for new and innovative software for schools, districts, and states across the country.
Work with architects, software engineers and operations personnel to design and implement large-scale Linux systems from front end to back end.
Help shape the product and/or platform roadmap, define scope, participate in estimation efforts, and prioritize initiatives
Contribute to continuous improvement of systems management processes from automated release and testing to operations monitoring, automatic provisioning, escalation, disaster recovery and security.
Work with security experts and software architects to implement appropriate information security protocols.
Develop and maintain operations run-books for systems.
Maintain and improve a CI environment that is using Jenkins (Hudson).
Maintain a system that is deployed in the cloud, specifically Amazon EC2 with EBS and S3.
Maintain a growing Puppet environment.
Requirements of the Systems Engineer:
BS/MS in Computer Science or equivalent, followed by 5 or more years of professional software systems engineering experience.
Proven technical leadership experience in a software engineering environment.
Strong CS fundamentals with an emphasis on operating systems.
Experience with application server deployment, configuration and operation. Linux/Java stack preferred.
Taste for simplicity and elegance in technical design and implementation as well as an appreciation for test driven development and building software the right way.
Experience with database deployment and operation of: PostgreSQL, MySQL.
Experience with a configuration manager such as Puppet, Cfengine or Chef.
Experience with the configuration of Tomcat.
Preferred Experience and Knowledge
NoSQL experience with MongoDB, Cassandra, or Hadoop/HDFS
