Career Success Comes One Step at a Time

When you think about your college career, it certainly wasn’t something that started and finished in one day. You started out as a freshman, and then moved up to sophomore status. Once you completed all the courses you needed, you became a junior. From there you made it to senior status and finally when you reached 124 credit hours you had enough credits to graduate with your bachelor’s degree. The only way you were able to graduate from college was to take it one step at a time, or in this case, one class at a time.

When you stop to think, this step by step approach that is used to matriculate through college, is a good example, by which to live and learn, as you go through the rest of your life. The reason you should not abandon a continual learner approach, is because as long as you are alive you will need to stay on a learning curve to keep your mind working for you. Your personal value will always be contingent upon how current and valuable your knowledge and skill sets are. If you are not learning you are stepping backwards.

Taking this thought process one step further, your college degree is only a ticket to earn an invitation for an interview. The companies you interview with are looking for graduates who can solve their problems. They want people who are willing to learn. Your self confidence, personality and attitude will get you hired. However, your ability to keep learning and developing your skills, will keep you employed over a lifetime.

Be prepared to keep learning and make this commitment clear to your future employer. Let them know that you realize that you can only be as valuable as your knowledge base and skill sets. By employing this philosophy over a lifetime, and you will never be unemployed.
