    Executive Director, Public Affairs, Corporate Reputation

    Reporting to the SVP, Public Affairs, this role will develop the strategy and lead the implementation of global reputation initiatives, serving as a senior-level cross functional strategist and executor, connecting internal teams and ensuring alignment and collaboration toward achieving Gilead's reputational objectives. This role is critical in shaping and safeguarding the internal and public image and perception of the organization.

    The role includes being the architect of long- and short-term programs and reputation strategies involving corporate positioning, perception building among key stakeholders, and executive positioning. It will set the vision, strategy, develop campaign(s) and oversee the successful execution of work across the organization to positively shape familiarity and favorability of the company among internal and external stakeholders.

    Managing a team of two direct reports, the role is responsible for helping to maintain and build upon Gilead's position as a leader in Virology, an emerging leader in Oncology, and a thought leader in Health Equity by articulating Gilead's vision across external and internal audiences, raising awareness of unmet medical needs our science and programs seek to address, and ensuring key audiences are aware of Gilead's commitments to access and health equity. This role plays a critical role in managing and enhancing the public image and perception of the company, safeguarding and promoting Gilead's overall reputation. This role partners with the Public Affairs Leadership Team, the Office of the CEO, Government Affairs & Policy, Medical Affairs, Investor Relations, Commercial and other global, regional and country teams to align them behind cross-functional priorities and drive tailored implementation at a local level.

    Responsibilities include

    • Evaluate, shape, build, execute and protect Gilead's corporate reputation across the globe. This involves identifying key reputation drivers, establish goals and creating comprehensive plans for all areas of the organization to adopt and integrate in their own goals, objectives and ways of working.

    • Be the reputational strategic advisor to the GLT, The Board and to key functional leaders.

    • Cultivate positive relationships with key stakeholders including, patients, customers, patient advocacy groups, policymakers and influencers, HCPs, investors, regulators, media, and the general public. .

    • Establish clear priorities aligned with Gilead's overall mission and goals.

    • Provide decisive leadership in setting the strategic direction to enhance our corporate reputation, driving innovation by identifying and capitalizing on emerging trends, technologies, and market opportunities.

    • Develop and implement crisis communication plans to address any potential threats to the company's reputation. Act as a key spokesperson during crisis, providing timely and transparent communication to mitigate risk and reputational damage.

    • Work with other functional leaders across the organization to develop and execute cross-functional and cross-organizational initiatives aimed at advancing Gilead's reputation with key influencers, ensuring reputation management strategies align with overall business objectives and priorities.

    • Play a lead role in connecting dots, facilitating information sharing and integration and engendering greater cross-functional collaboration.

    • Develop and set strategies and execute sustained efforts to build, enhance, preserve and protect Gilead's corporate reputation to help advance business and brand building objectives. Collaborate with marketing and communication teams to ensure brand messages align with the desired corporate reputation, ensuring consistency in messaging across all communication channels.

    • Translate the value of Gilead's reputation objectives, strategy, metrics, programs and campaigns to business leaders and the role of corporate reputation in driving business outcomes.

    • Position Gilead's leaders as industry thought leaders by leveraging strategic content development, speaking engagements and industry involvement.

    • Develop an evaluation method to track our reputation across key stakeholder groups and use the insights to constantly strengthen our reputation efforts going forward. This includes using tools and processes to monitor media and social media sentiment. Conduct thorough analysis to identify trends, issues and areas for improvement.

    • Advise executives on reputation-related matters, providing insights and recommendations to guide decision-making throughout the organizations, and ensuring alignment between business strategies and reputation goals.

    • Work proactively to help Gilead shape and influence the environment in which industry issues are debated; mitigate regulatory threats or policy decisions that could constrict the company's license to operate and business prospects.

    • Manage agency partners, providing agency teams with appropriate information and oversight to effectively implement reputation campaigns and programs in compliance with Gilead's business conduct policies.

    • Oversee financial allocation and budgets, ensuring alignment with organizational priorities, optimizing resource utilization, and effectively managing budgets to achieve targeted outcomes.

    • Through benchmarking and being informed on industry trends, focus on continuous improvement by implementing processes and rigor to continuously evaluate and improve reputation management strategies and tactics to improve our reputation management strategies.

    • Oversee the Chief of Staff role, who oversees critical projects, streamlines decision-making processes, and ensures efficient coordination between various teams, designed to help achieve Public Affairs' goals and objectives.

    • Ensure team members' professional growth and career development by implementing personalized development plans, providing training opportunities, fostering a healthy and safe work environment and creating a positive culture.

    Knowledge, Experience and Skills:

    • Strategic thinking and communication skills

    • Crisis management expertise

    • Stakeholder relationship management

    • Leadership experience in public relations, public affairs, corporate communications, or crisis management

    • Experience managing or enhancing corporate reputations, preferred

    • Key attributes include: quick thinking, results-oriented, love of words and ability to paint a story, ability to see the big picture while having a keen eye for detail, collaborative spirit, creativity, discretion, persuasiveness, resourcefulness, organization, confidence, initiative, patience, warmth, flexibility and enthusiasm.

    • Typically requires a BA degree in communications, liberal arts, business or science-oriented field and 16+ years of relevant experience, which includes deep experience in reputation building, issues management, internal and external communications and corporate as well as brand positioning.

    • Demonstrated experience driving reputation building campaigns and initiative at scale and across multiple markets / countries.

    • Ability to develop, manage and implement a complex public affairs communications programs with an emphasis on reputation management.

    • Experience leading teams and supporting both team performance and individual team members' development.

    • A proven track record of managing through influence and experience bringing teams together to align on shared priorities in service of achieving aligned objectives.

    • Ability to interact with senior management, more senior leaders and peers.

    • Exceptional understanding of reputation measurement, including public opinion research and experience utilizing research to inform strategy, approach and tactics of campaigns among varied audiences.

    • Deep experience in project management.

    • Prior experience in biopharma communications, advocacy, reputation and issues management required.

    • Understanding of the HIV and / or Oncology therapeutic areas a strong plus.

    • Experience working outside of the US, or in a global role required.

    • Demonstrated knowledge of regulations governing communications for a publicly-traded biopharmaceutical company.

    The salary range for this position is: $274,635.00 - $355,410.00. Gilead considers a variety of factors when determining base compensation, including experience, qualifications, and geographic location. These considerations mean actual compensation will vary. This position may also be eligible for a discretionary annual bonus, discretionary stock-based long-term incentives (eligibility may vary based on role), paid time off, and a benefits package.
