    Manager, Content Editing - Nursing/STM Journals

    Philadelphia, PA or Remote

    The Manager, Content Editing - Nursing/STM Journals role manages editorial production activities. Organizes unit(s) to ensure the equitable distribution of resources and to maximize productivity. Continually analyzes methods and policies; initiates change. May supervise editors of books, journals, manuals, and/or newsletters. Monitors and reports to senior management problems in production that could result in deviation from publication plan/forecast. Actively seeks out solutions to production and scheduling problems in order to minimize their impact on planned revenues and forecasts. Keeps abreast of current developments in management and in the publishing field; develops and implements operational improvements.

    • Direct and oversee the editorial content and strategy for assigned title(s) to ensure that it and all ancillary products meet journalistic standards for quality and professional publishing, and the needs of the readers and business.

    • Works with authors and editorial staff to acquisition and develop manuscripts that are appropriate for each journal's readership and mission.

    • Oversee editing and writing assignments for editorial staff to meet all production deadlines for journals, websites, eNewsletters, and social media sites.

    • Work with outside Editor(s)-in-Chief to ensure that title(s) are positioned correctly for their respective markets, considering competition and financial goals.

    • Ensure that title(s) provide readers with interesting, in-depth coverage of clinical issues and healthcare trends in their respective markets, including annual editorial markers such as salary, work/life balance, and other surveys.

    • Oversee design of print and digital products, such as supplements, directories, and special projects that are sponsored via educational grants or commercial means, writing grants if appropriate.

    • Evaluate manuscripts within the Editorial Manager system for acceptance, revision, or rejection, initiating and tracking the peer-review process to ensure article accuracy.

    • Seek society affiliation agreements and compulsory subscription adoptions of title(s) to increase revenue opportunities and improve market positioning.

    • Position title(s) to earn or improve Web of Science Impact Factor or ESCI ranking as appropriate.

    • Monitor Kantar rankings and work with marketing and editorial team to improve rankings via eNewsletters and digital marketing.

    • Work with marketing to ensure timing and messaging of individual subscription programs are on target to support revenue.

    • Review and approve article PDF for print and digital formats throughout the production cycle.

    • Direct and supervise editorial staff and freelancers in assigned writing and editing projects.

    • Oversee the online and social media presences, including annual short- and long-range goals for each, i.e.: regular inclusion of rich media such as videos, podcasts, blogs, online/digital-only content, etc.

    • Direct the publication's social media strategy (Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Instagram, etc.), including annual short- and long-range goals for each, ie: frequency of posting/tweeting, posting strategies, social media events, and potential commercial support, etc.

    • Manage the annual editorial calendar, brainstorming fresh ideas for the print and online versions and related branded products.

    • Maintain Editorial Advisory Board(s) and review annually to ensure optimum market coverage.

    • Work with Publishing Directors and Publishing Associate to interpret monthly and annual P&Ls, identifying issues and remediation plans.

    • Work independently and as a direct liaison to Publishing Directors, taking initiative and ownership of journal(s) with minimal supervision.

    • Work with Publishing Directors, outside Editor(s)-in-Chief, and Sales Directors and Reps to create advertising sales strategies that enhance revenue and readership.

    • Ensure timely editorial workflow in accordance with production schedule.

    • Attend related annual professional conferences either live or virtually, as appropriate.

    • Set annual goals and objectives for all reporting employees, including developmental goals and reviews in performance management system.

    • Assist Publishing Directors in calculation of annual editorial budgets and monitor monthly expenses accordingly.

    • Complete monthly MOR highlights report with feedback from editorial team as well as other reports and analyses as required.

    • Collaborate with the Rights, Licensing, and Permissions teams for strategic opportunities to increase revenue.

    • Perform other job functions as assigned a minimum of 6x annually.


    Education: Bachelor's degree preferred, or equivalent experience.

    Required Experience:

    • 5+ years editorial experience, preferably with STM publications.

    • Proficiency in MS Office.

    Preferred Experience, Knowledge, Skills, Abilities or Certifications:

    • Management experience a plus.

    • Knowledge of Editorial Manager or other online management submission systems strongly preferred.

    • Strong editing and rewriting skills.

    • Good oral and written communication skills.

    • Project management skills.

    • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.

    • Must be detail-oriented and able to meet deadlines.

    • Knowledge of social media and online strategies.

    • Knowledge of SEO and other web optimization strategies.

    • Familiarity with creating podcasts, videos, blogs.

    • Ability to work closely with editorial and composition teams.

    • Ability to work closely with society partners.

    Travel Requirements : as needed, on occasion, to conferences. Approximately 5% travel.
