    This position is comprised of two distinct but significantly interrelated areas of responsibility - Production Management & Lighting Design.

    DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Production Manager (70%)
    The Production Manager (Program Operations Specialist (NE S 7)) is responsible for planning, scheduling, and providing the technical support required for all Dance productions, production facilities, and production equipment. The Production Manager must identify and solve problems, communicate effectively both orally and in writing, work independently and collaboratively, and maintain effective working relationships with Department of Dance faculty and staff, Meany Hall operations staff, the University community, guest artists and collaborators, and the larger performing arts community.

    Duties of the Production Manager include

    Planning (25%)

    • Assist the Department Chair and Administrator with preparation and control of production budgets;

    • Maintain production costs within budget constraints;

    • Contribute to long range planning and budgeting of ongoing facility and personnel needs;

    • Competent use of e-mail, word processing, spreadsheet, database, drafting, and media editing applications.Logistics & Technical Oversight (25%)

    • Develop and distribute production schedules.

    • Schedule and facilitate regular production meetings, production conferences and post-production evaluations.

    • Evaluate the appropriate level of technical needs for safe and successful concert and performance event runs.

    • Identify equipment and other production supply needs and coordinate with the Department Administrator for procurement.

    • Maintain inventory of production supplies and equipment.

    • Monitor the condition of production equipment: perform or arrange for repair, replacement, and preventive maintenance on equipment as needed.

    • Train faculty, staff, and students in safe operation of production equipment including the Black Box performance space in Meany 267.

    • Maintain proficient knowledge and skill in contemporary software and other tools, including learning new technologies to keep pace with the state of the field.Supervision, Leadership, & Other (20%)

    • Support faculty and students by serving as a topic expert in professional dance production, providing regular trainings, workshops, and technical presentations in an educational setting.

    • Identify, schedule, and supervise professional services as needed to support productions.

    • Schedule, train, and supervise student stage crew members and stage managers during load-ins, spacing, technical, and dress rehearsals, performances, and strikes - including training in the use of tools, equipment, and software used in contemporary production settings.

    • Stage Manage as needed.

    • Work with the Artistic Director to monitor and direct the effort of the concert costumer, making sure to keep person hours and costume procurement within budget.

    • Work closely and effectively with the Meany Hall Technical Director to schedule and direct the efforts of Meany Hall Stage Technicians while Dance productions are in residence in Meany Hall performance venues.

    • Other duties as assigned by the Department of Dance Chair and/or the Department of Dance Administrator. Lighting Designer (30%) The Lighting Designer is responsible for final implementation of the artistic decisions for the lighting of a production. They work closely with the Artistic Director and Choreographer(s) to create a lighting design that is integral to the overall look and feel of a production. The Lighting Designer must communicate effectively both orally and in writing, work independently and collaboratively, and maintain effective working relationships with the concert Director(s), choreographers, performers, guest artists/collaborators, Meany Hall staff, and other colleagues.Duties of the Lighting Designer include:

    • Support faculty, guest artists, and students by serving as a topic expert in professional lighting design and provide regular trainings, workshops, and technical presentations in an educational setting.

    • Work with the Artistic Director and Choreographer(s) to design a world of light that supports the dance, adding to and enhancing the overall effect of the performance;

    • Draft a lighting plan and liaising with the Technical Crew to rig the lights and realize the design;

    • Focus the lights (i.e., pointing them in the correct direction, deciding how large and what shape the light from each instrument needs to be and in what color, etc.);

    • Plot the lights (i.e., making the stage pictures for each moment/scene in the production by turning on lights, choosing a level, color, focus for them to tell the story of that particular moment of the piece, etc.);

    • Recruit and supervise student designers;

    • Competent use of e-mail, word processing, spreadsheet, database, drafting, and media editing applications.

    • Maintain proficient knowledge and skill in contemporary software and other tools, including learning new technologies to keep pace with the state of the field. CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

    • 50% FTE (Average 20 hours/week).

    • 10 Months (Typically 1 September - 30 June).

    • Variable work schedule includes evening and weekend hours.

    • Near and far vision will be required for reading, viewing rehearsals and productions, setting up and operating hardware and computer control systems for lighting, sound, media, rigging and other equipment, and communicating with others using hand signals.

    • Hearing will be required to set up and operate sound systems and to communicate with others.

    • Prolonged sitting, standing, walking, reaching, twisting, turning, kneeling, bending, squatting, and stooping may be required in the performance of daily activities.

    • Grasping, repetitive hand movement, and fine coordination may be required in operating equipment, using tools, and preparing written material.

    • Climbing ladders and working at heights from ladders, personnel lifts, and catwalks may be required.

    • Lifting materials weighing up to 50 pounds and pushing wheeled equipment weighing up to 1250 pounds may be required. MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

    • Bachelor's Degree in Lighting Design, Technical Theatre, Production Design, Production Management, or related field and 2-3 years of practical experience in professional and/or educational production settings with an increasing level of responsibility as Lighting Designer, Stage Manager, Production Manager, or Technical Director.

    • Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration. ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

    • Knowledge of techniques, methods, and procedures for theatrical production including design and implementation of lighting, sound, media, and rigging systems, scenic construction, stage management, and appropriate safety precautions and procedures.

    • Experience training and supervising adult learners in the installation and operation of production equipment during load-ins, rehearsals, performances, and strikes;

    • Experience researching and reconstructing designs from technical drawings, technical riders, and other documentation.

    • Experience managing projects within a team environment, relating to diverse populations, exercising independent judgment in resolving problems, and maintaining positive interactions in a visible and pressured multitasking environment.
