    The Washington National Primate Center (WaNPRC) has an outstanding full-time opportunity for a Public Relations and Media Manager.

    The primary purpose of this position is to fulfill the mission of WaNPRC which is to empower the delivery of leading-edge scientific discoveries and promoting the highest standards of care, health, well-being and conservation for primates around the world.     Reporting to the WaNPRC Chief Administrative Officer, the Public Relations and Media Manager leads all internal and external communications for Primate Center Seattle and Arizona sites, including website, media relations, government/legislation relations, advertising/promotion, and social media. The incumbent works closely with Primate Center leadership, UW entities and resources, to align the Center's communications and media strategy. She/he also works closely with the Primate Center director and leadership team to continually assess and identify opportunities that further the Center mission. He or she will also oversee Primate Center initiatives, planning, coordinating and aligning Seattle and Arizona sites, along with UW, in all shared projects and goals involving communications and media. This will include communications around legislative responses and outreach, national and international relations, public information responses, and identified projects.

    The Manager holds a key leadership role initiating and implementing communications strategy, media/public relations, and government relations efforts that keep the Center's internal and external constituencies informed about the impact of the Center's work, as well as enhance the overall image and awareness. In addition, this position will be primary for strategizing response to Public Information Requests and emergent-response strategy.

    Position requires strong communication and media skills, as well as the ability to problem solve, take initiative, set priorities, and handle multiple projects with shifting deadlines and prioritization. The successful candidate will be able to exercise good judgment in a fast-paced, dynamic, goal-driven, and analytic research environment.

    Under the supervision of Chief Administrative Officer, work collaboratively with Primate Center leadership and UW to develop priorities and execute communications and media strategy, including:

    • Plan and implement communications as they relate to website and media strategy, with particular focus on public relations, promoting data-driven research information, as well as initiatives and partnerships with UW, national Primate Centers and regulatory entities. High-level and sensitive communications may be coordinated with representatives from UW.
    • Provide communication and media consultation and strategy to director, center leadership, principal investigators, and staff and faculty throughout center.
    • Strategically plan for and lead Primate Center communications in response to Public Information Requests. Partner with Center leadership and utilize internal resources for response strategy.
    • Partner with the UW Public Information Officer, media relations and outreach, especially regarding the quality and impact of the Center research and major initiatives/developments. Including partnerships and responses for National Institute of Health, Office of Research Infrastructure Programs, NPRC Consortium activities, WaNPRC Outreach, Government Relations officials in UW Office of External Affairs, and affiliated external agencies which promote animal model biomedical research.
    • Produce internal and external communications and media materials based on data-driven analysis and measurable expected outcomes.
    • Oversee e-newsletters and launch media-related information on platforms such as Twitter and others as identified that promote Center research. Identify partnerships with principal investigators, including staff and faculty, that enhance research awareness.
    • Plan and produce, individually or in partnership, communications to legislative officials, included letters to state and federal delegations, coordinate visits with legislators, organize the Center's representation at state and national levels.
    • Oversee the ongoing content updates and improvements to the Primate Center website. Including development and enhancement of platform and overall aesthetic and presentation. Position will identify resources which improve website and all connected media.
    • Lead executive communications, including writing emailed messages, blog posts and remarks on behalf of the director or Primate Center in response to emergent or elevated events. Position may also create PowerPoint presentations for the director to deliver, producing talking points when needed.
    • Represent Primate Center on central UW boards and workgroups as appropriate.
    • Perform other duties as required to support the mission and strategic plans of the Primate Center.

    Requirements:

    Bachelor's degree in Marketing, Communications, Public Administration or equivalent work experience in related field.

    Additional Requirements

    • Minimum 7-8 years of demonstrated experience in development and execution of strategic and analytic communications and media plans, including public relations, state, national and international, and social media oversight.
    • Record of superior writing and editing skills for media and communication purposes, as well as a demonstrated ability to write in a style and voice suitable for a variety of audiences, including research, legislators, faculty, staff, and the general community. Ability to apply critical thinking and sound judgement to problems and tasks.
    • Commitment to service excellence.
    • Clear and concise written and verbal communication; ability to successfully communicate to multiple stakeholders in various media.
    • Strong organizational skills, ability to set priorities, data-driven, and high degree of attention to detail.
    • Ability to manage multiple competing priorities concurrently as evidenced by timely completion of multiple tasks.
    • Ability to work with diverse people with tact, diplomacy, discretion and sensitivity, as well as promote DEI-related activities.
    • Record of strong project management skills.
    • Collaborative working style, including development of novel approaches to complex activities.

    Desired:

    • Master's degree in Communications, Marketing, Public Administration or other related fields or significant experience in strategic communications leadership, including 10+ years of applicable experience.
    • Demonstrated experience in building and sustaining collaborative working relationships.
