  • Brief Posting Description

    The Public Relations Specialist is responsible for communications to the member systems, public and media, including preparing articles, press kits, press releases, newsletters, messaging documents and other content initiatives. Cultivates rapport and manages relationships with media representatives. Works closely with other Tri-State departments to develop member information, public information and media relations strategies. Develops various communications products and reports, and provides content for member communications, employee communications and social media.

    Job Requirements

    ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

    • Create communications, media and public relations plans, strategies and content to clearly articulate Tri-State positions and support Tri-State initiatives. Support the company's voice via online and offline channels.

    • Coordinate and produce content for external and internal communications products, including member communications newsletters, annual report and other online tools and offline publications.

    • Support media relations, including serving as a contact for media queries and writing press releases, media announcements, speeches and other public relations copy. Prepare presentations for media briefings and other meetings. Build and maintain targeted media lists and nurture relationships with key local, regional and trade reporters. Produce weekly media reports.

    • Work in conjunction with Tri-State members and other Tri-State departments to coordinate communications and media relations messages and opportunities to build support and encourage advocacy for Tri-State's positions.

    • Develop and maintain crisis communications plans. Coordinate communications plans across organization. Provide effective crisis management communications.

    • Conduct research and analyze public opinion. Monitor and analyze effectiveness of public relations campaigns and communicate insights to management.

    • Collaborate with external stakeholders including public information officers and industry organizations.

    • Adhere to and demonstrate compliance with appropriate electric utility industry regulatory requirements. Attain knowledge and remain knowledgeable of development in regulations, laws, standards and best practices applicable to the functional area including, but not limited to, Standards of Conduct, Environmental, Employment Law, NERC Reliability Standards and Safety. Must be familiar with, and comply with, all aspects of Corporate Policy C-54, Compliance.

    OTHER DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:

    • Assist in development of organizational outreach plans and materials for key initiatives.

    • Perform other related duties as assigned.

    REQUIRED JOB QUALIFICATIONS:

    Education and Training:

    • Bachelor's degree in Journalism, Communications, Marketing, Public Relations, Public Policy, Political Science, or equivalent combination of education and work experience.

    Knowledge, Skills, and Ability:

    • Working knowledge of electric utility industry or environmental issues.

    • Experience in media relations, copywriting and editing.

    • Excellent oral and written communications skills with a demonstrated ability to simplify technical issues.

    • Experience working with cross functional teams (external affairs, government relations, environmental, and community relations).

    • Strong people skills and the ability to collaborate and communicate with members and employees at all levels of the organization.

    Experience:

    • Eight (8) years of relevant, progressive experience.

    Other:

    • Willingness to travel as required, which could be up to 25% of time. (Possession of valid driver's license or ability to obtain.)

    • Must be able to demonstrate that he/she can perform all of the essential functions of the position, including submission of writing samples upon request.

    DESIRED JOB QUALIFICATIONS :

    • Editing experience preferred.

    • Experience gained from past work in media relations and public relations agency.

    • Experience in crisis communication planning and response.
