  • Microsoft's Corporate, External and Legal Affairs Department (CELA) has an immediate opening for a Senior Director, Competition and Consumer Protection Policy, based in our Washington, D.C. office location.

    In this role you will drive Microsoft's policy and legal agenda relating to competition and consumer protection issues, partnering with federal and state government affairs teams to achieve impact. You will collaborate closely with the company's Competition and Market Regulation Group, the Privacy and Regulatory Affairs Group, Office of Responsible AI and other stakeholders. You will also engage with policymakers, regulators, academics, and others to consider the role of competition law in the face of our changing economy, the development of new technology, and passage of new laws and regulations.

    The role requires demonstrated subject matter expertise, orientation to and empathy for customers and partners, curiosity and interest in technology, and engagement in and a sophisticated understanding of the political and regulatory environment. Ideally, it would be preferable to have experience as an attorney in this space as well.

    Responsibilities

    • Contribute to, and develop, Microsoft's competition and consumer protection policy agenda and/or advocacy strategies for top priorities, and manage affairs in rapidly changing and ambiguous political, policy, and industry environments.

    • Develop and sustain relationships with a broad network of external stakeholders, particularly in Washington, D.C., to expand Microsoft's competition and consumer protection advocacy and build and deepen trust with these important legal and policy communities.

    • Lead engagement with external industry, business, political, or legal groups, as well as academia to drive Microsoft's competition and consumer protection-related objectives - whether legal, regulatory, or policy - and external outreach initiatives (e.g., engaging at conferences, hearings, workshops, or participating on committees).

    • Respond to key strategic issues and recommend actions by prioritizing, ensuring alignment with stakeholder positions, leveraging specialists, or escalating matters.

    • Develop strategies for U.S. regulatory and/or legislative initiatives and assesses their impact on Microsoft goals and objectives; delivers materials (e.g., strategy, policy briefings, other documentation) to internal stakeholders.

    • Assist with Public Relations and communications efforts as needed.

    Qualifications

    Required/Minimum Qualifications

    • Bachelor's Degree in Public Policy, Public Administration, or related field AND 5+ years experience in government affairs, corporate affairs, public policy, or government.

    • OR 8+ years experience in government affairs, corporate affairs, public policy, or government.

    Preferred Qualifications

    • J.D. degree from an ABA accredited law school preferred.

    • 10+ years senior level industry and/or government experience related to the competition and consumer protection law

    • 8+ years experience with federal regulatory and legislative processes or directly related activities involving the technology sector.

    • Ability to represent the company publicly in a variety of settings and flexibly to switch gears, as well as work under high pressure and tight deadlines.

    • The ideal candidate will be a strategic thinker with significant legal and policy advocacy experience.

    Government Affairs IC6 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $152,300 - $266,800 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $194,800 - $292,200 per year.
