    Description:

    Candidate will be proficient in both Spanish and English languages, as well as skills related to oral interpretation and medical terminology. Basic computer and documentation skills are also essential.

    SUMMARY

    Responds to requests and interprets the specified language for the deaf or hard of hearing or Limited English Proficiency (LEP) patients, staff, and physicians within Trinity Health. Serves as an advocate for specific portion of the deaf or hard of hearing and LEP population regarding issues of culture, ethnicity, and language diversity.

    QUALIFICATIONS

    Education

    • Minimum High School diploma or equivalent

    • Preferred Bachelor's Degree in target language or in health care related field.

    • Minimum Sign Language Interpreters: Michigan BEI II or National RID certification, with State of Michigan Medical Endorsement.

    All other language Interpreters: CCHI certification, or a passing score of 80% on a Trinity Health Medical Interpreter Qualification Exam; AND acquisition of the following: CORECHI certification within 12 months of employment and full CHI certification within 15 months of initial employment.

    Preferred Completion of a qualifying medical interpreter training program.

    Related Experience

    • Minimum Two years of interpretation experience

    • Preferred Interpretation experience in health care setting

    Other Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

    • Minimum Ability to communicate verbally and in writing in both English and the target language.

    • Basic knowledge of medical terminology required. Demonstrated customer service skills. Able to work independently. Able to prioritize competing requests for service and determine when additional resources are needed.

    • Preferred: Has a clear understanding of cultural issues for the population served. Ability to advocate for the deaf or hard of hearing or LEP client. Able to translate basic documents into the target language.

    Computer Competency

    Familiarity with standard desktop and windows-based computer system, including email, e-learning, intranet and computer navigation. Ability to use other software required to perform essential functions.

    Physical/Mental

    Minimum Standing or walking for long periods of time (frequently). Computer work / keyboarding (occasionally)

    Potential exposure to blood and body fluids. Potential exposure to communicable diseases. Assignment may be in any location within the hospital so conditions vary with assignment. Interactions with staff and patients/families may be routine or highly emotional. All interactions must be confidential.
